This fact sheet is for people who are considering smart lipo.

No matter how fit, active or health conscious we are, many of us have stubborn areas of fat we cannot get rid of.

Liposuction is a form of cosmetic surgery, however this procedure is not as invasive as liposuction, Smart Lipo is a revolutionary laser lipolysis (fat removing) procedure that contours the body, with less downtime & side effects than traditional liposuction.

Smartlipo is performed under local anaesthetic, and most clients are fit to return home or to their hotel within 30 minutes of completion of the procedure.

Why have Smart Lipo & how effective is it?

Smartlipo is indicated in the treatment of localised fat deposits in healthy patients having ideal weights. Like other forms of liposuction, Smartlipo ois not a solution to obesity, it is designed to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat in specific areas of the body. The procedure breaks down the membrane of the fat cells and turns the fat into an oily substance that is then excreted naturally from the body.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

The hips are the most commonly treated site, but smart lipo can also be performed on the tummy, inner & outer thighs, inside of the knees, ankles, upper arms, neck and back, male breasts, chin.

Due to its additional skin tightening effect, Smartlipo can be beneficially used in conjunction with conventional Liposuction for larger areas of the body.

How many treatments are required?

For most clients, one treatment is sufficient. However, for larger areas, SmartLipo can be repeated on the same area with a four month interval.

How long does the procedure take?

The duration of the procedure depends on the number of areas to be treated. Up to three areas can be treated in a single session of between 1 to 2 hours..

What should I expect in hospital/clinic?

Before undergoing your Smart Lipo, the surgeon will discuss the procedure with you and your expectations along with the possible outcome. At this time your surgeon will also discuss possible side effects and what to expect in the weeks following the procedure.

The Procedure

A small probe (1 mm) is inserted under the skin. Only a local anaesthetic is administered. The laser is turned on and moved along the area with constant speed and it melts the fat which will be removed by lymphatic system. The area will look better immediately.

Because this treatment required local anaesthetic, and not general anaesthetic, it doesn’t need to stay in hospital, but one can go soon as soon as they finish their treatment.

This procedure also removes blister in which fat accumulates. Our body can’t  produce new cells of this type, so the areas which are treated are not able to store fat again. But if you put on weight again, excess fat will be distributed throughout other area, but not in the treated area.

This treatment is safe for any adult. Positive results of the treatment depend on the health of the person but not on age. But those with heart, kidney or some complicated medical history should try to avoid the treatment.

Treatment can be done on the same day of the consultation. The treatment time varies on the no. of areas to be treated. But normally it takes 1 hour for one area. The results of the treatment can be seen in 1 or 2 weeks. But you can see final effective result in 8 to 12 weeks.

After the procedure

Painkillers will be given to help with any discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off.
Once you have had a general anaesthetic, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and should try to organise for a friend or relative to stay with you for the first 24 hours.

This treatment does have side effects, there may be temporary bruising on the skin around the area but it lasts in 1 or 2 days. Other possible side effects are infection, bleeding, haematoma, burns. Minimal swelling, bruising or discomfort may be felt following treatment.

Clients are generally recommended to return to their normal activities almost immediately after treatment, although it is advised to avoid strenuous sport and saunas for up to two weeks, and intense massages for four weeks.

Clients are asked to wear a special garment to facilitate healing and compress the area for up to 7 days after treatment. Of course Endermologie lymph drainage sessions will help to speed up the results.

Recovering after Smart Lipo

Once home, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen should be taken regularly or as needed, as advised by the hospital.

When are results visible & are the result permanent?

Although many clients report seeing results within days of treatment with continued improvement over several weeks, final results are visable after 3 to 4 months.

Results are permanent, however like with any slimming/weight loss treatment or programme, a supplementary healthy lifestyle is necessary to maintain the body’s condition & Smartlipo’s efficiency
